CHALLENGE EDUCATION

3rd through 8th grade levels or classrooms of students participate on the challenge course to learn skills that create caring and safe classroom and school communities.  Emphasis is placed on building a caring and safe classroom and school community.

The Challenge Education program is an educational tool used to expand the continuum of services offered to all students and staff. It is a hands-on action oriented program that provides opportunities for students to interact cooperatively and successfully with others.

Participants and placed in a stimulating environment where, by collaborating on tasks that challenge their imaginations and capabilities, they can grow in the following areas:

The Challenge Education program is facilitated by your schools trained classroom teachers, teacher assistants and counselors.  This and group processing assures the transfer of learning back into the classroom. Schools may participate in the SPICE program without training their own facilitators.  However, they will be required to pay the cost of a contracted trained facilitator.

Elementary School programs are for students' in grades 3-5.  The students participate on the low ropes course where individuals are challenged and supported by the rest of the team. The students are introduced to team building skills including goal setting, trust, communication and cooperation.

The Challenge Education Program for secondary schools includes the use of the teams course and high-level activities.  The purposes of the activities are to challenge students to be responsible, to produce positive results as individuals and as members of a team and to demonstrate positive leadership.

Academic Standards

In education today, we must take the best of what we know to improve learning for all students. The mission of the Challenge Education program is to develop character skills essential in creating a learning environment that is free of threat; a caring school and classroom community working toward a common goal.  The sequenced approach allows for students to explore goal setting, self and group awareness, trust, communication, cooperation and problem solving. This program develops skills sequentially which helps students to be more successful in school, home and the community.

Inferences and applications for meeting academic criteria exist throughout the Challenge Education experience.  Please inquire about how the SPICE Challenge Program relates to the State of Indiana Academic Standards.
